The Verdict

Worth a half-day or overnight for the setting and old mansions, but it gets crowded with day-trippers from Volos on weekends.

Why go

The plane-tree square with its mosaic fountain is the kind of place to sit for an hour with coffee and nowhere to be. Restored 18th-century mansions, now guesthouses, line the stepped lanes, and views open over the Pagasetic Gulf between the chestnut trees. It's small enough to see properly in a few hours.
