The Verdict

Worth a stay for the Archaeological Museum and food, not for beauty — it's a working city, not a postcard.

Why go

The Archaeological Museum holds the best Minoan collection anywhere, including the Phaistos Disc — essential before or after Knossos, a 20-minute drive away. The Venetian fortress Koules guards the old harbor, and the market streets behind it run some of Crete's best raki-and-meze spots. It's rough around the edges, but that's part of why the food is cheap and good.
