The Verdict

Worth a multi-night stay for anyone wanting old-town atmosphere, a real beach in town, and good food without Heraklion's grit.

Why go

The Fortezza fortress overlooks a harbor lined with minarets and wooden balconies, Venetian and Ottoman layers stacked without pretense. Unlike Chania, the town beach runs for kilometers right off the old quarter, so you don't need to drive anywhere. The university population keeps prices and the bar scene more relaxed than the cruise-ship towns.
