Amoudi Bay
The Verdict
The best swimming on the caldera and the only place below Oia the day-trippers do not reach. Take the steps, not a donkey.
Why go
The bay sits at the foot of the Oia cliffs, with red rock on one side, the open sea on the other, and a row of tavernas built onto the quay. Swimming is straight off the rocks into deep clear water, which is a rare thing on Santorini. Walk down in the late afternoon, swim, eat at the water, and then decide whether to climb back up in the dark or take a boat round to Ammoudi's neighbouring cove.
Understand the place
The small harbour below Oia, reached by three hundred steps down the cliff, with fish tavernas at the water and deep clear water to swim in.
