The Verdict

One of the oldest settlements in Europe, laid out in low walls on a bare hill — older than Troy, and usually empty.

Why go

Poliochni is a settlement from the fourth millennium BC, which makes it older than Troy, and it is quietly astonishing: houses with hearths and storerooms laid out along streets, some walls still a metre high, all of it fenced, signed in two languages and usually with nobody else there. The site sits on a low hill above the coast, ten minutes from the village of Kaminia by car, and it explains in one visit what the Aegean looked like before the palaces.
