The Verdict
A big, empty, wind-scoured island in the north Aegean: volcanic hills, one beautiful harbour town, and one of the oldest settlements in Europe.
Why go
Limnos is big, bare and agricultural, with the wind blowing across it and very few visitors: wheat and vines, volcanic hills at the west end, sandy beaches along the south coast, and the harbour town of Myrina under its castle. In the east, Poliochni is one of the oldest settlements in Europe, occupied from the fourth millennium BC, and the site is fenced, signed and usually empty. It lacks the villages and the lushness of Lesvos or Samos; in exchange you get space.
Understand the place
A large, quiet North Aegean island of volcanic hills, sandy beaches and wheat fields, with Myrina harbour in the west and the Bronze Age site of Poliochni in the east.
