The Verdict

The most important pilgrimage church in Greece after the icon it holds — busy, and genuinely moving whatever you believe.

Why go

The church holds the icon of the Annunciation, found on the island in 1823, and pilgrims come to it all year, crawling up the carpeted road on 15 August to reach it. Behind the church a treasury holds the votive offerings left by survivors of shipwrecks and wars, which is the part most visitors remember. It is open daily and free; covered shoulders and quiet are expected.
