Kos Town

The Verdict

A harbour town with a castle, a Roman house under glass and more bicycles than cars.

Why go

Kos Town has a real harbour with a castle at its mouth, the plane tree of Hippocrates in a square, and, a short walk away, the Casa Romana — a Roman villa excavated and roofed over, its mosaics still in place. The town is flat and the cycle paths are real, so you hire a bike rather than a car, and the waterfront runs on tavernas and ice cream. It is busier and more developed than Symi or Karpathos, and considerably easier.
