The Verdict

Worth 2 nights on its own merits, and essential as the staging point before heading into the Zagori and Vikos Gorge.

Why go

The old town's stone lanes, Ottoman mosque, and lakeside walls make for a dense half-day walk, and Lake Pamvotis adds boat trips to the island monastery. Silver-working has been a local trade for centuries and the shops still show it. It's also the only real city near the Zagori villages and Vikos Gorge, so most Epirus trips run through it.
