The Verdict
Essential for hikers and anyone wanting Greece without the Aegean — rent a car and give it at least four days.
Why go
Epirus is where Greece stops looking like the islands: grey-stone villages, oak forests, a gorge deeper than the Grand Canyon by some measurements, and an Ottoman-era lake town in Ioannina with a castle quarter and island monasteries. Zagori's villages (Papingo chief among them) are built for walking between, not driving through. Parga gives you a Ionian coast finish if a week of mountains is enough.
Understand the place
Greece's northwestern mountain region: the Pindos range, the stone villages of Zagori, the Vikos Gorge, lakeside Ioannina and the coast at Parga.
Beyond the built
Outdoors & nature

Vikos Gorge
A massive limestone rift requiring a brutal seven hour trek. It is essentially a sun-baked rock oven that demands significant preparation, adequate water supplies, and serious physical fitness from anyone attempting the full traverse between Monodendri and Vikos.
“An unforgiving endurance test that offers raw geological scale for those who prioritize rugged terrain over comfort and shade.”

The Stone Bridges of Zagori
These arched relics of the Vlach era provide a quiet way to traverse the beech woods of Epirus. By connecting the villages of Kipi and Koukouli, you observe precise traditional engineering without the intense logistical strain of the nearby gorges.
“An accessible cultural walk that trades heavy elevation gain for historical detail and pleasant, quiet forest paths.”
Places within

Papingo
A split stone village at the head of the Vikos Gorge, Papingo is where Zagori walking trips start and end, with a cold-water rock pool as reward.
“Worth it for hikers and anyone chasing mountain quiet; skip it if you need nightlife or flat easy strolling.”

Ioannina
Epirus's lakeside capital — a walled old town on a peninsula with a working mosque, silver-working workshops, and the main gateway to the Zagori villages.
“Worth 2 nights on its own merits, and essential as the staging point before heading into the Zagori and Vikos Gorge.”

Parga
A seaside town on the Epirus coast with a Venetian castle on the headland, pastel buildings stacked above a bay, and olive groves behind it.
“Good for a beach-focused stop on an Epirus or Ionian coast trip, but it runs busy and package-tour heavy in high summer.”

Metsovo
A mountain town on the Pindos pass with Vlach heritage, carved wooden interiors, and some of the country's best cheese and red wine.
“Worth an overnight for the food and mountain character alone, especially as a winter or shoulder-season stop between Epirus and Thessaly.”
