The Verdict

Worth a night if you're routing through northern Greece or catching a ferry to Thasos; not a destination on its own.

Why go

Kavala's old town, Panagia, climbs a peninsula under a restored castle with the Kamares aqueduct striding across the valley below. The harbor is still a working one, lined with fish tavernas rather than souvenir shops, and the tobacco warehouses downtown tell the story of the city's early-1900s wealth better than any museum placard. It's also the main ferry link to Thasos.
