The Verdict

The main harbour of Paxos: a waterfront of tavernas and a wooded islet with a chapel sitting in the middle of the water.

Why go

Gaios is the practical centre of Paxos: one long waterfront of tavernas and shops, a small square behind it, and a wooded islet with a chapel just offshore, two minutes away by boat. The harbour fills with day-trippers in the middle of the day and empties by six, which leaves the evenings to whoever has booked a room. Scooters and small boats are hired from the quay, and the rest of the island is a short drive away.
