Astypalea Chora

The Verdict

A white hill town of windmills and lanes under a Venetian castle — the prettiest thing in the Dodecanese that nobody has heard of.

Why go

The chora of Astypalea sits on a hill above the port with a Venetian castle on the summit, windmills along the ridge and lanes of white houses between them. The castle is a short climb, and from it the view takes in both lobes of the island and the isthmus joining them. Below, Pera Gialos is the old port, with a small beach and tavernas on the water, connected to the chora by road and by steps.
