The Verdict
A butterfly-shaped island with a Cycladic-looking chora, a Venetian castle and almost no visitors.
Why go
Astypalea is two rocky lobes joined by a narrow isthmus, so the island is shaped like a butterfly, and its chora — white cubic houses, windmills, a Venetian castle on the rock above — looks far more Cycladic than Dodecanese. It is quiet almost to the point of emptiness: the beaches at Livadi and Kaminakia are sand and reachable by scooter, the fishing village of Vathy sits at one end, and one road runs round the whole island. Arrive, book a room in the chora, and slow down.
Understand the place
The westernmost of the Dodecanese, two rocky lobes joined by a narrow neck, with a white hill town and quiet beaches.
