The Temple of Demeter at Sangri

The Verdict

Worth it for the setting as much as the ruins: a temple in a working field, with nobody there.

Why go

The temple was rebuilt in the 1990s using the pieces that had collapsed around it, which makes it legible without making it a fake. It stands alone among terraced fields of olives and vines, and the road up through Sangri and Chalki is one of the best drives on Naxos. Combine it with a village lunch; an hour is enough for the site itself.

A small fourth-century BC marble temple rebuilt from its own fallen stones in the middle of farmland inland from Naxos Chora.
