The Verdict
Skip for Sparta itself, stay for the logistics — it's the sensible bed for seeing Mystras without rushing.
Why go
The ancient city left almost no ruins worth a special trip; what you get instead is a functional, inexpensive town with good tavernas and an easy half-hour drive to the Byzantine ruins at Mystras. It also sits at the base of the Taygetos range and puts the Mani peninsula's stone towers within reach for a day.
Understand the place
A modern grid-plan Laconian town with almost nothing ancient left standing — useful mainly as a base for Mystras, the Mani, and Taygetos.
