Serifos
Photo: Greece Field Guide
The Verdict
A bare, iron-mining Cycladic island with a white chora on the hill and beaches almost nobody uses.
Why go
Serifos mined iron for a century and the ruins of the loading works and the miners' houses are still on the coast below the chora. The chora itself is one of the prettiest in the Cyclades — white houses on a hill with a square at the top and the port of Livadi below — and the beaches at Psili Ammos and Agios Sostis are sand and mostly empty. It sits between Piraeus and Sifnos, and it deserves two nights rather than a stopover.
Understand the place
A quiet Cycladic island west of Sifnos, its chora on a hill above the port, with iron-mining ruins and long empty beaches.
