The Verdict

A solid, unglamorous base for island-hopping and a calmer, cheaper alternative to both Mykonos and Santorini.

Why go

The Frankokastro's walls are stacked with column drums and temple blocks lifted from an Archaic-era sanctuary — look closely and you'll spot the carved marble. Panagia Ekatontapiliani, one of Greece's oldest functioning churches, sits a few minutes from the ferry dock. The waterfront fills with tavernas at night without the Mykonos price tag.
