The Verdict
A town without cars: white houses and captains' mansions round a horseshoe harbour, where everything moves on foot, by bicycle or by boat.
Why go
Spetses town is built round a horseshoe harbour with neoclassical houses along the water — the shipowners built them in the nineteenth century, when the island ran a merchant fleet and threw its weight behind the war of independence. Cars are effectively banned, so the town moves by foot, bicycle, horse and boat, and the result feels like nowhere else in the Saronic. Eat on the old harbour, walk the coastal road out to the beaches, and see the Bouboulina house, kept much as its owner left it.
