Delos

The Verdict

The best half-day you can spend from Mykonos, and hardly anyone plans for it. Go on the first boat and leave before the last one.

Why go

Delos was a pan-Greek sanctuary and a slave-trading port, and because it was abandoned rather than built over, the whole plan is legible: the sacred precinct, the terrace of the lions, the theatre, and streets of merchants' houses with mosaic floors still in place. There is no shade and no village, so take water and walk it in the first two hours. Ferries leave from Mykonos Town and take about thirty minutes.

Understand the place

A whole ancient city on a small island off Mykonos: sanctuary, theatre district, houses with mosaics, and no modern town on top of any of it.
