The Kouros of Apollonas

The Verdict

A strange, human thing to stand next to. Worth it only if you are already driving the north coast.

Why go

Naxos was the great marble island of the archaic period and this figure was cut and then abandoned, probably because it broke or because the quarry was a commercial failure. It lies where it fell, roped off at the edge of the village, with the marks of the tools still on it. Combine it with lunch in Apollonas and the drive back along the north coast, which is the emptiest road on the island.
