Ancient Thera

The Verdict

The only place on Santorini where the island's history outweighs its view, which is saying something given the view.

Why go

The city runs along the spine of Mesa Vouno with a sheer drop on both sides, and because there is no village on top of it, the street plan, the houses and the sanctuaries are all still readable. Inscriptions are cut into the rock, and the remains of the road up are still the road up. It takes about an hour to walk properly and there is no shade and no water. Go early.
