Terraces of grey stone ruins on a hillside above the sea at ancient Kamiros, Rhodes.

Ancient Kamiros

The Verdict

The quietest of Rhodes' ancient cities, and the one where you can actually read the town plan. Come here instead of queueing at Lindos.

Why go

Kamiros is laid out in clear steps up the slope: a stoa, a temple platform, a reservoir, and rows of house foundations you can walk between. Because there is no village on top of it and no temple to photograph, almost nobody comes. You will have most of it to yourself, and the west-coast light in the late afternoon is excellent. An hour, unhurried, is the right amount of time.

One of the three ancient cities of Rhodes, on a hillside above the west coast, excavated into readable terraces of houses, temples and a reservoir.
