Aegina Town

The Verdict
A working harbour town with a fish market, a pistachio counter on every second corner and the best-value eating in the Saronic.
Why go
Aegina Town has kept its working side: the boats land at the quay, the covered market sells fish and pistachios under one roof, and the streets behind are ordinary and lived-in rather than prettified. On the edge of town a single column stands alone in a field, the last remnant of the temple of Apollo, with no fence and no ticket. Buses to the temple of Aphaia and the beaches leave from the harbour, and the hydrofoils back to Athens leave from the same quay.
Understand the place
The port of Aegina — a horseshoe of a harbour, a covered market, and the buses to the temple and the beaches leaving from the quay.
