When to Go to Greece
Greece has a long season, but the right time depends on what you want — and the wrong time is a real mistake.
The shoulder seasons are the best
May, June and September are the best months for most travelers: warm, green (in spring) or golden (in autumn), with manageable crowds and full ferry service. October works in the south (Crete, Rhodes) longer than the Cyclades. July and August are hot, crowded and expensive, and the meltemi wind disrupts ferries. November to March is quiet, with reduced service and many island businesses closed.
Match the month to the region
The Dodecanese and Crete have a longer warm season — good into October. The Cyclades empty out by late September. The Ionian islands are best in June and September when it is green and not at peak heat. Mainland mountain regions (Meteora, Zagori) are best outside July-August heat and winter snow.
