Cyclades vs Ionian Islands
Quick Verdict
Two completely different Greeces: bare, blue-and-white volcanic islands vs green, wooded, calm-water islands.
How they compare
| Dimension | Cyclades | Ionian Islands |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Whitewashed cubes, bare rock, deep blue | Green, wooded, olive groves |
| Swimming | Aegean, often windy | Ionian, calmer and warmer |
| Best base | Athens / Piraeus | Corfu or Preveza; not from Athens |
| Car need | Optional on most islands | Recommended to see the islands properly |
| Island hopping | Excellent ferry network | Possible, less dense network |
| Crowds | Very busy in peak | Busy, slightly less intense |

Choose Cyclades if
- — you want the iconic blue-and-white Greece
- — you're starting from Athens
- — you want to island-hop easily

Choose Ionian Islands if
- — you want green, calm, family-friendly beaches
- — you prefer a less photographed, more wooded landscape
- — calmer swimming water matters
Our Verdict
First trip, from Athens, the Cyclades is the obvious and excellent choice. Choose the Ionian when you want green, calm water and a gentler pace, and are happy to fly into Corfu/Preveza rather than start from Athens.
